Night of Tribute to Carol Munch: The Thanks are All Mine! What a celebration you gave me. The evening was more than I ever could have expected and it was great to see so many old friends, and old quilts. I thank the Claire Lilienthal community for all the support you have given to me and to the quilt project over the years. Thanks to the administration and staff for helping with the organization and collection of the many quilt memos, to the teachers for developing the themes and giving us precious class time for the quilt artwork, to the students for putting your most creative work into your quilt squares each year, and to the many parents who help wash & iron fabric, design quilts, help in the classroom, sew the quilts, come to the quilting bees to finish the quilts, take work home, provide us food while we’re quilting, and to the parents who honor us by bidding on the quilts at the auction, even when financial times are tough. In any one year over 800 people are involved in the quilt project. And as I said on the evening of the gala celebration, be careful what box you check off in your Wed. envelope because you could look up 16 years later and find yourself being honored for a project you had no idea you were getting yourself into when you make that simple decision to volunteer at your school. We are truly a parent-partnership school, and as much as I have given to Claire Lilienthal, I have received back 100 times as much in your friendships and your good will. I will miss you all, but I believe you will still be a part of my life and my wonderful memories. Thank you so much for your honoring of me in so many ways. I am truly grateful from the bottom of my heart.
Carol Munch - PS. The quilt that the quilt team made for me will be hung at the Scott campus this week. Come and see the creative work of Elissa Misner, Sue Persons, Lisa Lee Sosa, Desry Gunther and Natasha Stevenson.
Green School Yard expansion project a success on April 18th!
130 volunteers came to lend their hands towards a pre-Earth Day greening effort of preparing the ground for our green schoolyard. At the peak period, an estimated 50 people were working on the 2 planting areas. Each hour of work chipped away at the monumental task and filling the dumpster ordered for the occasion and creating 3 mounds of material for a second dumpster ordered on Tuesday. It was gratifying to see our Landscape Architect, Jeff Miller, volunteering a whole Saturday, to help us prepare the ground. Pam Nagle, of the Miller Company, after a morning of planting 30 trees with the Friends of the Urban Forest, came by during the afternoon to help us add mulch to the planting areas. It was gratifying to see Nan McGuire, of the SF Green Schoolyard Alliance coming by to join the celebration and even pitched in to help. In addition, thanks go to Tommy's Restaurant (beans, rice and salad), SF Environment (compostable utensils) and Janet Moyer of Janet Moyer Landscaping(time). ________________________________________ Update on the CL Green Schoolyard Program: Currently the design by The Miller Company, is out to bid. Construction is expected to start as soon as school is out for the Summer. Completion is expected in mid August. With the 2009-10 school year starting early on August 24, 2009, we will schedule another call for 100 Hands for the Saturday, August 22nd, of the weekend before school starts. At this 100 Hands Day, we will build the raised planter boxes where our students will be planting seeds. One goal is to grow some food that can be harvested in November. That food will be part of the feast planned to celebrate a real “Thanksgiving”, thanking the volunteers and supporters of our Green Schoolyard program.
